Matt 21:1-12
1 when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, 2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. 3And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them. 4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by prophet, saying, 5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. 6And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, 7And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. 8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. 9And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. 10And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? 11And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee. 12And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

 1. At this point in the history of the people of God, what is the situation at the temple in

 2. Why an ass?
It was to fulfil prophecy (Maranatha foretold) Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O
daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

 3. Why the village against them, why not Bethpage?
There was an ass and her colt there that was tied down. These animals were not free rangers, they were yoke fellows. The distance they could travel was within the circumference of the rope that was used to tie them down. They seems to miss out on the happenings of life, they seems odd, yet they were the Lord’s future vessels of honour.
These two animals were contented in taking up the yoke. They have conformed their lives to the standard of their owners. Christ coming for in Revival is going to come through His disciples, men and women that are tied down for Him.
Are you tied down in discipleship? Are you in a discipleship relationship with the Lord and with a human hand, or you are a free ranger? Is there anyone watching over your life, your home as a wife/husband, as father/mother and even as a minister etc.

 Are your children yoked in discipleship? What and who is shaping your children choices, who is modelling their music, fashion, movie taste, their attitudes to money etc Lam 3:27. Are we passive in crying Maranatha or active? If we seek the Lord to come indeed, we must be active in the matter of discipleship. Revival came in time past and vanished because:

  • People were carried away with activities and neglect their sincere personal growth.
  • People were involved in meetings upon meetings, but no deliberate raising of lives that are tied down in discipleship.
  • Lives were not followed up in pursuit of discipleship.
  • Though there was teaching on sanctification, the cross etc but some of these revivalist have not fully experienced the outworking of Christ’s life in them.

Christ would only go to the village against them where an ass and her colt were tied down. Brethren, the Lord have need of you, so allow yourself to be tied down now in discipleship. There is a family, kingdom lifestyle that is imbibed into all that take up the yoke of discipleship. Their languages, pursuit, manner of life are all defined, as their lives becomes no longer their own.

Prayer points


  • A cry for personal discipleship: Help me not only to yield to the call to the cross, but help me now take your yoke as I learn more about the crucified life.
  • Lord, open my eyes to see under whose hands I need to be tied down.
  • Discipleship is lost in your church visit your church again in discipleship.
  • For the Lord Jesus to come, there needs to be a raising of men and women in discipleship, restore discipleship back to your church at large.
  • Let practical discipleship be restore back to your church.
  • Deliver your church from just making of converts, make us makers of disciples.
  • As parents cause us to see our children as individual entity that needs discipleship.
  • Make the Srilanka school project a centre of raising disciples so that you.
  • Give us strategies to raise disciples as the staffs for this school.
